We live in a world where hate crimes have escalated drastically in the last few years. And because of conspiracy theory and ignorance women of color have borne the brunt of that escalation. Defense-ability is offering a program that will help Silicon Valley women of color protect themselves/fight back.

Silicon Valley Women’s Self Defense

Defense-ability is changing statistics, one woman at a time.  Our goal is to empower, equip and educate women to defend themselves, regardless of age or fitness level. Women’s Self Defense Classes offered by Defense-ability are tailored to the lifestyles of women here in the Silicon Valley and the Bay Area.

I took this course with my teenage daughter.  The information and training provided was super valuable.  Rebecca educates about being aware and avoiding the situation, but also provides techniques and tips for being able to react to a situation and get yourself to safety.  My daughter and I both got a lot out of the course and it has allowed us to have a continued dialogue about the importance of sharing your whereabouts and making the best choices to ensure personal safety.  Priceless!

We are living in uncertain times…

It’s better to be safe than sorry. Create a safer environment and reduce your risks by planning for the unexpected.

Our program teaches basic skills, such as situational awareness and boundary setting. In addition we teach “street smarts” – safety information for everyday living along with physical self defense skills.

Last week, I had the opportunity to experience Part 1 of 2 self-defense workshops conducted by Defense-Ability founder, Rebecca O'Brien.
Learning about the potential dangers around you can be anxiety provoking and Rebecca doesn't shy away from telling you about the horrors that can happen if you are a woman traveling alone. However, she follows up each scenario with a realistic solution so you leave the workshop feeling knowledgeable and empowered. Rebecca has multiple safety tips to share but her style of presentation is so fluid, I personally did not feel overwhelmed with information. She didn't use many props other than a TV and a taser, but her speech was very effective. Her passion for helping people is channeled in her tone and mannerisms and the entire time I felt like I was being mentored one on one even though I was in a room full of other people. In summary, I highly encourage both sexes of all ages to experience this workshop. I feel like the lessons learned are beneficial if not for yourself, but for someone you care about. Part 2 of the workshop will be coming up soon and I hope to update this post then with more information on my experience!

Women’s Self Defense Classes

Students gain critical skills, increase confidence levels, and learn to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations they may encounter. Our workshops are small, friendly and relaxed. Our instructors are encouraging and supportive. Our goal is to be sure that each student leaves the class with more confidence in their ability to defend themselves successfully.

Classes are open to women 18 years of age or older (15-17 with parental permission) and designed to be low impact,  information packed, and suitable for adults. At Defense-ability you will learn the importance of situational awareness, and how to defend yourself physically.

If you can’t find a class that fits your schedule, why not book a private class? Get a few of your friends, neighbors or co-workers to join you! With as few as ten students we can bring the class to you – or we’ll teach your group at one of the private facilities we use.
